Better Measure of M&A: Employees, Customers and Legacy

The generator service industry is entering a period of significant consolidation. On one side are large corporations and institutionally backed companies with capital, systems, and geographic reach. On the other are independent, locally owned businesses built on technical expertise, customer relationships and decades of trust. The debate is often reduced to a simple question: Is bigger better? That is the wrong question.

The better question is whether growth benefits the people who depend on the business, specifically its employees, its customers, and the owner who built it.

Invest in Employees, Not Bureaucracy

The first test is how an acquisition will impact employees. The skilled trades do not have people to waste. The Associated General Contractors of America reported in its 2025 workforce survey that 92% of firms trying to hire were having difficulty finding qualified workers. (AGC)

In that environment, an acquisition that drives away experienced technicians destroys part of the value it was intended to acquire. Technicians carry institutional knowledge, customer history and field judgment that cannot be replaced by a new logo or operating system.

Employees should gain the advantages of a larger organization without inheriting unnecessary corporate bureaucracy. That means better tools, stronger benefits, meaningful training and visible career paths, not layers of approval that slow decisions or a distant culture that ignores how the work is performed.

Gallup has found that employees who strongly agree their organization encourages them to learn new skills are 47% less likely to be searching or watching for another job. (Gallup.com) Investment in people is not simply an employee benefit. It is a retention strategy and an operating advantage.

Consider the Customer

For customers, a well-executed acquisition can combine local accountability with greater capability. In generator service, responsiveness is shaped by density. More technicians, parts, rental equipment and operating locations within a market can improve scheduling, strengthen emergency coverage and shorten the distance between a customer and the help they need.

A stronger balance sheet can also support investments that many independent companies cannot make alone: technician training, diagnostic technology, cybersecurity, inventory, fleet, remote monitoring and more robust customer-service systems.

Scale can make life simpler for customers operating multiple facilities. Instead of managing different vendors, contracts, invoices and service standards across markets, they may be able to work with one accountable provider. But bigger is only better when scale removes friction without eroding the relationships and judgment customers already trust.

Give Sellers More Than a Check

The third test is whether the seller’s legacy survives the transaction.

Some transactions are designed primarily around financial timelines and return requirements. Others begin with a broader question: How can this combination create a partnership that provides lasting value for the people connected to the business? Owners deserve fair financial value for what they have built, but for many, the check is only part of the decision. They do not want to disappear after the deal is done. They also want to know that loyal employees will have a future, customers will continue to be treated well and the company’s reputation will still matter.

PwC’s 2025 Global Family Business Survey found that preserving the family legacy was a top long-term goal for 77% of respondents, surpassing the goal of generating dividends (PwC). Therefore, the right buyer needs more than capital. It needs empathy, fairness, transparency and the operational capability to deliver on its commitments.

Sellers should evaluate not only what a buyer promises to protect, but whether it has the training systems, leadership resources, technology and cultural maturity to keep those promises. Good intentions matter. Demonstrated capabilities matter more.

A Better Definition of Growth

M&A can benefit the generator service industry when it expands capability without erasing identity. Employees should gain opportunity without losing culture. Customers should receive faster, simpler and more consistent service. Sellers should realize financial value without surrendering the legacy they spent a lifetime building.

The pursuit of superior returns aligns with this approach. Meaningful investments in people, training, technology, processes and culture can generate stronger, more sustainable returns for all stakeholders. These are the foundations of a durable business capable not only of consolidating the industry but also of genuinely disrupting the status quo.

Too often, consolidators overlook these fundamentals or offer little more than lip service, resulting in value destruction instead of creation. Bigger is not automatically better, but it can be when scale is used with discipline, fairness, respect and a long-term commitment to building something that lasts.
